Motivazioni e obiettivi

To overcome the “one size fits all” behavior of most search engines, in recent years a great deal of research has addressed the problem of defining techniques aimed at tailoring the search outcome to the user context to the aim of improving the quality of search. The main idea is to produce context-dependent and user-tailored search results. Search tasks are subjective, and often complex; the user-system interaction based on keyword-based querying and on the presentation of search results as a list of web pages ordered according to their estimated relevance is often unsatisfactory. In this course a short overview of the main issues related to contextual search are outlined.

Programma

The aim of this course is to present some challenging research issues in Information Retrieval (Web search engines represent the tip of the iceberg of Information Retrieval). In the first part of the course the basic definitions as well as the main structure of an Information Retrieval System (Search Engine) will be introduced. Then two main research issues will be investigated: the issue of uncertainty in query formulation and the issue of personalising search.

In particolar, the following topics will be addressed:

  • uncertainty related to the syntactic query expression à spelling corrections
  • uncertainty related to query ambiguity
    • query expansion
    • relevance feedback and pseudo relevance feedback
    • flexible query languages
  • personalising search
    • definition of user profiles>
    • processes aimed at tailoring search to the user context
Modalità di svolgimento

The course will be structured into lectures, including a lecture by an internationally reputed scientist in the field.

Modalità d'esame

Final relation and seminar presenting a perspective of the selected research topic.
