Abstract: Computational Intelligence and Quantum Computing are two of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving research fields of our time. Their integration opens a new and promising paradigm in computation: Quantum Computational Intelligence. On the one hand, computational intelligence algorithms can potentially achieve significant performance improvements by exploiting quantum phenomena such as superposition and entanglement, which enable intrinsic massive parallelism. On the other hand, the development of quantum computing technologies, still characterized by high complexity and experimental challenges, can benefit from classical computational intelligence techniques for optimization, control, error mitigation, and system design. This talk explores the emerging landscape of Quantum Computational Intelligence, focusing on how core computational intelligence methodologies such as genetic algorithms, neural networks, and fuzzy systems can be redesigned and implemented with the support of quantum computing frameworks. The discussion will highlight conceptual models, implementation strategies, current limitations, and future research directions at the intersection of these two transformative fields.
Bio: Autilia Vitiello (Senior Member, IEEE) received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science at the University of Salerno, Italy, in 2009 and 2013, respectively. From 2025, she is an Associate Professor in Computer Science with the Department of Physics “Ettore Pancini” of the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. At the same department, she was an Assistant Professor from 2018. She is chair of the IEEE P2976 Working group on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). Moreover, she is part of the IEEE P1855 Working Group for Fuzzy Markup Language Standardization where she also serves as Secretary. Moreover, she is also member of the Editorial board of Springer Quantum Machine Intelligence. Her main research area is Computational Intelligence, and in particular, Fuzzy Logic and Evolutionary Algorithms, and the integration of these research areas with quantum computing. Prof. Autilia Vitiello was a recipient of three Best Paper Awards (at the 2012 United Kingdom Workshop on Computational Intelligence, the 2021 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems, and the 2024 United Kingdom Workshop on Computational Intelligence), and the IBM Quantum Experience Academic Research Program Award (2021), the IEEE Computer Society Emerging Technology Award (2022) and the Fujitsu Quantum Challenge Award (2024).
