The paper “After Theft: From Revocation to Neutralization in the Custody of Quantum Clones” by Gabriele Gianini, Jianyi Lin, Corrado Mio, Stelvio Cimato and Ernesto Damiani has received the Best Research Paper Award at the international IEEE Cyber Humanities 2026 conference.
The study investigates an emerging property of encrypted quantum cloning: the possibility of generating multiple encrypted copies of a quantum state while preserving only one effective opportunity for decryption. It explores how this property, connected with some of the distinctive and often surprising features of quantum information — including the role of non-local correlations — can be used as a tool for post-compromise custody and incident response.
In particular, the work shows that, after the theft of an encrypted copy, it may under suitable conditions be possible to remotely neutralize its future utility without physically recovering the stolen copy. The paper also discusses potential applications to distributed preservation and the custody of digital cultural assets in the context of Cyber Humanities.
