The team composed of Flavio Piccoli, Davide Marelli, and Marco Buzzelli, representing the OnFoods group from the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication (DISCo) at the University of Milano-Bicocca, has been selected to take part in Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition 2025, one of the leading European events dedicated to scientific and technological innovation.
The team presented VisionMeal, a computer vision and artificial intelligence-based system for the automatic recognition of dishes and estimation of their weight on cafeteria trays. The goal is to support nutritional monitoring and help reduce food waste.
VisionMeal stems from research carried out within the RECCO project – Food recognition and characterization using computer vision, intelligent sensors and artificial intelligence.
The RECCO project, coordinated by Prof. Raimondo Schettini, is part of Spoke 7 – Policy, Behaviour and Education: Smarter Behaviors for Healthier Diets within the PNRR OnFoods – Research and Innovation Foundation for Food and Nutrition Sustainability initiative.
The research group includes research fellows Flavio Piccoli, Davide Marelli, and Marco Buzzelli, as well as Professors Gianluigi Ciocca and Simone Bianco.
During the three days of MakerFaire Rome 2025, hundreds of visitors stopped by the OnFoods booth to try out VisionMeal and learn about its capabilities, showing great curiosity and interest in the ongoing research.
